Welcome to The Overage Undergrad

This blog is about my attempt to do better in this college experience than my previous one. Due to, ya know, actual studying, you should not expect polished or even reasonably readable posts.

This blog is seriously lacking posts..

I'm sorry for the lack of updates in the past weeks. It turns out school is really fucking hard.

Slow Progress..

As expected, not a whole lot has happened since my last update. I have plenty of work to do but life is made somewhat better by ECU’s dining hall. That’s right – the school cafeteria is actually good. I’ve eaten there a few times now and every time it has been delicious! I thought all cafeterias sucked but I was wrong. They use fresh local vegetables and even use –gasp- seasonings. My only gripe is that for some reason the damn heat is on in there. The AC is on too but the baseboards are going full blast. Maybe they should drop the price of the meals and turn the heat off when it’s 90˚ outside.

I should note that my “sir” count increased by one again last week. A kid asked me where a certain building was on campus. I was so happy about actually knowing the answer that I didn’t slap him. Also, the woman in the cafeteria asked me if I was faculty. I think I should count that as a “sir” too.

I had my first Biology lab last Thursday which was utter chaos. The TA showed up 5 minutes before class and I’m pretty sure she didn’t prepare at all. At one point she literally read the due dates off the syllabus word-for-word. I’m hoping the rest of our labs are better because all sections are graded the same and I don’t want to end up getting screwed because my TA sucks.

I also got through Physics just fine. This is the class that sent me crazy my first week, but since I re-learned a bunch of calculus between the two classes I was able to do all the problems we were given. It’s amazing how helpful it is to actually know stuff. I should have learned that a long time ago. Oh well!

Speaking of knowing stuff, I have my first exam on Monday. I’m not really worried about it because it’s Calculus so it should be a breeze. Never fear loyal readers – I will still study for the test. I don’t know when though. This weekend is the first ECU home game of the year. ECU does not have a great team, and they are playing Virginia Tech who does have a pretty good team but that’s not the issue. Home games are for tailgating. Obviously I plan on doing a bit of drankin’ on Saturday afternoon. Normally that would leave Sunday open for studying, but in a bit of scheduling madness this Sunday the Ravens are playing the Steelers. I could skip some Ravens games but not when they’re playing Pittsburgh. So I probably will be spending a fair bit of Sunday not studying. I’ll find the time somewhere though. I’m not taking anything for granted this semester, or this year, or this degree.

Day Three..

Day Three has been completely erased from my memory. I had a little freakout but luckily f (freakout) = e^(-freakout) so I'm refocused and ready to roll.

Day Two..

I have mixed feelings about how Day Two went. The beginning of the day was mostly fine but then end of the day had me frustrated beyond belief.

Day One..

As it turns out, Day One wasn’t so bad after all. That’s not to say it went smoothly or even that it went well, but at least Christina didn’t come home to find me hiding under the bed sucking my thumb. Here’s how the day went..

The day before..

Classes start tomorrow so I’ll finally be able to start writing about the experience of going back to school instead of all the experiences leading up to it. I have to admit I’m pretty anxious about the whole thing. Even though I have been to college before, there is a HUGE difference between Guilford and ECU. The biggest class I had at Guilford was about 35 students and most only had 18-24. This semester two of my classes at ECU will have over 125 students. That’s a big change!

The schedule...

Classes start in three short days so I thought I’d run through my schedule for the semester. This is a purely informational post with no entertainment value whatsoever (so.. pretty much like all the others!) I’m starting off at full speed, so it’s a busy schedule with four classes and three labs to go along with them.

How I got here...

I should explain at least a little about my personality. I have been a slacker since about 4th grade. Blame it on my parents’ divorce, on my father’s genetics, or just on the fact that I would rather have fun than do work. In any case I have always done the least amount of work possible in order to get by. That statement alone is the best explanation of how I got to this point.

Let me introduce myself...

Here’s the thing. I’m 35 and I’m about to start college. I don’t mean like one of those “1 night a week” colleges where everyone is old. I mean I will actually be twice as old as most of the people in the room. There’s a good chance I’ll be older than at least one of my professors. I still think of myself as being fairly young so this notion is immensely stressful for me. I have decided that my only option for dealing with it is to blog it.
